Get Up... with Kimberly Davis
Written by Montgomery Logan
Kimberly Davis knows how to sing. She has performed behind superstar artists Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys, Rob Thomas and Mary Wilson. Now Kimberly’s stepping up from behind the mic and taking center stage. She releases her first dance single this month, and it’s sure to make clubbers ‘Get Up’.
Are you always the first to jump on the dance floor? If the DJ is playing my song, I am!
How did start your career? I toured with the 90s pop group, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. I was so young and man, it was a lot of fun! I loved recording and learning how to use my voice in the studio which is why today, recording is never a task. I'm quite quick at it, actually.
You graduated Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts – the school that inspired the movie, Fame. I remember my mom taking me to see that movie and I said to her "that’s the school I wanna go to!" Music has always been in me. I was singing TV commercials and every song on the radio since as long as I can remember.
Did students really dance on tables and act scenes out in the hallway? They certainly did!
How does fame compare to what you thought it would be back then? I always thought fame would be performing on stage for your fans, flying in and out of town for shows, walking the red carpet and being free to do what you want without having to answer to anyone. How wrong was I!
What did you learn singing behind legends like Mary J. Blige and Rob Thomas? I learned to watch the people you surround yourself with. Not everyone that smiles at you is a friend. I also learned that a band is like family and it’s important that everyone get along.
What skills did you learn singing back-up that you are now using in front? How to hold my mic like a lady and not a professional escort. I've also learned how to tell the difference between a stalker and an adoring fan from the stage.
How does singing center stage compare with back-up? Singing up front is better because you have the freedom to do whatever you want; that’s the part I love. When you’re singing background you stand on the "X" and stay there. Upfront you get to work the stage.
How did you become the lead singer of Nile Rodger’s classic disco band, Chic? The band’s drummer suggested me to Nile Rodgers. When I walked in to the audition, I smiled at everyone and started singing “I Want Your Love" with the band. When I finished, the business manager passed me the itinerary for the next tour and that was that.
Does the band perform 70s classic Chic songs like "Everybody Dance," "Le Freak," and "Good Times"? Yes! Also "I'm Coming Out", "We Are Family" and "Like A Virgin" - all songs written by Nile Rodgers.
How does your new single, Get Up, compare with those classics? “Get Up” has its own flavor that I think will help it stand the test of time like the classics.
What’s next for Kimberly Davis? I’m ready to take over the nation’s dance floors!
