HRC Holds Event to Educate Community About Its Activities

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Las Vegas is conducting their first 2010 HRC 101 event on Sunday, March 21.

Many of us know HRC—with over 750,000 members—is the largest national LGBT civil rights organization. A number of us may know that HRC Las Vegas holds the local annual “Dinner Gala” in August, which is their largest fund raising event for the year. Some of us may know about the HRC Family Event, which immediately follows the AIDS Walk. We also know HRC hands out the cool “equal sign” bumper sticker at many events, including Pride.

A few of us may know that HRC offers campaign support for targeted pro-equality candidates and plays a major role in elections across the country, or that HRC operates one of the largest and most successful political action committees in the country, which endorses fair-minded federal candidates and provides them with financial support.

But, how many of us know that HRC also hosts, sponsors, and supports numerous other events, activities, and LGBT community partners here in Las Vegas?  Do you know that HRC volunteers are working with other community organizations here in Las Vegas to promote equality for the LGBT community?

How many of us know about the HRC Foundation which funds in whole or part numerous programs such as the Coming Out Project, Family Project, Diversity Program, Religion and Faith Program, Workplace Project, and the Youth & Campus Outreach Program, to name a few?  How many of us know that the national organization of HRC and Steering Committee members in cities throughout the United States are all volunteers?

HRC 101 is the opportunity to find out what you don’t know about HRC. The Las Vegas HRC Steering Committee is hosting the event on Sunday March 21, at The Gay and Lesbian Community Center (953 E. Sahara Ave.), starting at 2 p.m.  The public is invited to attend and interact with members of the Steering Committee and sub-committees, learn more about HRC, and obtain information about the many programs and projects of HRC, upcoming community support programs in Las Vegas, and volunteer opportunities.

This is not a membership or fund-raising event of any type, simply a “free and open” opportunity for attendees to gain more knowledge of HRC and how HRC is at work for the LGBT community nationally and locally.  For more information about HRC 101, please visit http://lasvegas.hrc.org or call (702) 203-7120.
