Marriage equality was dealt a serious blow yesterday. North Carolina voted to codify discrimination into their state constitution and became the 30th state to redefining marriage as between a man and a woman by voting in favor of Amendment 1.

The move is astonishing consider that gay marriage was already illegal in North Carolina. Under the new anti-gay law, civil unions and domestic partnerships are also banned. Amendment 1 is a preemptive strike against LGBT people and civil rights in general.

Several other states will vote on similar amendments this year, including Minnesota and Washington state.
